Beauty and the Beast has been called one of the greatest films the Walt Disney Company ever made. It's one of only 2 animated films ever nominated for the Best Picture Oscar (Up was the 2nd) and was #7 on the American Film Institute's Top 100 animated films.
It's not surprising that Disney would give this movie a typically lavish debut on Blu-ray. What is surprising is how this film really doesn't hold up nearly 20 years later. Yes, it features brilliant animation and wonderful songs from Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, but it lacks the heart and trust in the audience that characterizes Disney's best work.
